Law enforcement authorities Sunday were investigating a horrendous crash in which two people were killed and two hurt when a van toppled from a Hollywood Freeway overpass and fell onto a car on the roadway below in the Cahuenga Pass.
Two female victims were pronounced dead at the scene and two males victims were taken to hospitals in critical condition, according to Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Their ages were not available.
It happened about 7:20 p.m. Saturday on the southbound Hollywood (101) Freeway at Barham Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol said.
Initial reports indicated the van possibly came off the Barham Boulevard overpass and landed on a sedan, according to the CHP, which turned over the investigation to the Los Angeles Police Department because the crash happened on a city street.
The CHP issued a SigAlert shutting down all but one late of the southbound freeway at Barham Boulevard.
There were still few details available, including information about why the van fell from the overpass. It was not known if the victims were in the van or car below, if they had been wearing seat belts, if speeding was involved or if alcohol or drugs were possibly responsible.
