A 22-year-old man paid for an attempted stunt with his life as he was killed trying to climb out of a moving pickup truck to stand on its running boards.
Police were still investigating whether alcohol was involved in the failed stunt, which was attempted as the truck headed east on Archdale Street, a residential street, toward Fielding Road in Riverside.
The pickup truck was being driven by a 23-year-old Riverside resident and was carrying two women and three other men just before midnight Saturday, police said.
The victim was seated in the back left seat of the crew cab, opened the door of the moving pickup and attempted to “stand on the outside running boards of the truck but somehow lost his grip and fell from the vehicle,” said Sgt. Benjamin Shafer.
The driver immediately stopped the truck and called police, he said.
The victim, whose identity was withheld, was transported to Riverside Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
