Mattel Inc. announced Thursday the appointment of Christopher A. Sinclair as chief executive officer, a title he’d held on an interim basis since January.

Sinclair, whose appointment is effective immediately, also will continue as Mattel’s chairman.

Mattel also announced the appointment of Michael J. Dolan as independent lead director and Richard Dickson in an expanded role as president and chief operating officer of the El Segundo-based toymaker.

“Since stepping in as interim CEO in January, Chris has been extremely active inside the company, developing with the board and the Mattel management team a comprehensive plan to improve the company’s performance and make the most of our incredible brands and opportunities,” Dolan said.

“He is moving with urgency and we are delighted that, with his agreement to sign on as CEO and continue to lead the effort personally, there will not be any delay in implementing the changes necessary to get Mattel back on track.”

Sinclair, 64, said the board and management team “are focused on achieving a rapid turnaround at Mattel and we have a clear game plan for what needs to be addressed.”

“This company has a powerful portfolio of global lifestyle brands with untapped IP potential, extraordinary toy design and development expertise and unmatched global sales and supply chain capabilities,” he said. “By moving quickly to reduce bureaucracy that has slowed decision making and diffused accountability, we are already beginning to benefit from greater energy and focus throughout the company.”

Sinclair’s previous jobs include stints as president and CEO of Quality Food Inc., Pepsi-Cola Co. and Pepsi-Cola International.

Dickson, 47, will have responsibility for all brands and commercial operations. He has served as president, chief brands officer since January after rejoining the company last May as chief brands officer.

He had worked at Mattel from 2000 to 2010, when he left to become president and CEO of The Jones Group Inc.’s branded businesses.
