The Board of Supervisors signaled its intent Tuesday to approve a 50-foot cell tower in Rowland Heights, based on a plan to disguise it as a clock tower.

Verizon Wireless agreed in March to come up with alternative designs for the wireless telecommunications tower, which was originally set to be camouflaged as a eucalyptus tree.

The Rowland Heights Community Coordinating Council felt the fake tree would be conspicuous on the site, a gas station parking lot at 2356 Fullerton Road with no other trees around it.

Cell towers have been disguised as palm trees, pine trees, flagpoles and water tanks, among other creative solutions.

The president of the RHCC told the board that there were some minor design issues to be worked out, but said the council supports the clock tower design, which includes a working clock.

No residents spoke out against the plan.
