“Fantastic Four: First Steps” remained the top-grossing film in North American theaters this weekend, but the Marvel release’s $40 million take was a substantial drop-off from its $118 million opening weekend, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
Second place went to DreamWorks’ “The Bad Guys 2,” which opened with $22.2 million, Comscore reported.
“The Naked Gun,” which reboots the beloved spoof franchise of the 1980s and ’90s with Liam Neeson stepping into the lead role formerly held by Leslie Nielsen, opened with $17 million.
“Superman” was fourth with $13.8 million Friday though Sunday in its fourth week of release, followed by “Jurassic World Rebirth,” which took in $8.7 million in its fifth week.
The horror film “Together,” starring real-life spouses Alison Brie and Dave Franco, opened in sixth place with $6.8 million.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “F1 The Movie” ($4.1 million), “I Know What You Did Last Summer” ($2.6 million), “Smurfs” ($1.7 million) and “How to Train Your Dragon” ($1.3 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $124 million. The year-to-date total is $5.428 billion — up 9.5% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
