A fire that burned through the roof of a one-story commercial building in Boyle Heights Thursday injured a firefighter and sent a plume of smoke that towered within view of downtown Los Angeles.
The fire was reported about 8 a.m. Thursday in the 3100 block of East Pico Boulevard, east of Soto Street.
A primary and a secondary structure were in flames, and crews were forced to fight the fire from defensive positions, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz.
One of the more than 90 firefighters who joined the battle was injured, but an update on the crew member’s condition was not immediately available, she said.
The fire was contained by around 9:30 a.m., according to Lantz.
A robot was deployed to help remove burning debris from compromised portions of the building.
Crews were expected to remain at the scene doing overhaul and mopping up for an extended period of time.
