A firefighter suffered a medical emergency, and $720,000 in construction materials were damaged when flames erupted in pallets behind a commercial building in Riverside Sunday.

The fire was reported at 8:36 a.m. Sunday at 6960 Jurupa Ave., according to Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief Greg White, who was the Incident Commander.

“The first arriving unit found a well-involved fire to the rear of the structure with immediate fire threat to the surrounding businesses,” White said. “Fire crews quickly made access and contained the fire to pallets of construction materials. The exterior of the building was damaged from the radiant heat of the fire and crews were able to prevent further extension into the building.”

The flames were out at 9:06 a.m., he said.

One firefighter suffered a “medical emergency” while working on the blaze and was taken to a hospital for treatment by ambulance, White said.

About $720,000 in construction materials were damaged by the fire, he said.

The cause was under investigation.
