The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a windblown dust advisory Sunday for portions of the Coachella Valley.

The advisory was in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday through at least 3 a.m. Tuesday in the areas of Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Coachella, Indio, Rancho Mirage and Mecca.

Dust blowing as a result of gusty winds was predicted to cause the air quality index to reach moderate levels, especially in the northwestern Coachella Valley.

Residents in the affected areas were advised to limit outdoor activity, remain indoors with windows and doors closed and use air conditioning or an air purifier.

Air quality can vary by hour depending on wind conditions. Current air quality by area is available at aqmd.gov/AQImap.
