Two people were killed and two were hospitalized from a multi-vehicle crash on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in Ontario that involved a big rig and left a car in shreds and could impact morning traffic coming into Los Angeles, authorities said Monday.

The crash was reported Sunday just before midnight on the westbound San Bernardino Freeway west of Fourth Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A witness told the CHP that a big rig crashed into vehicles and “split one of the vehicles in half.”

Video from the scene showed a shredded car surrounded by other damaged vehicles.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene and two were taken to hospitals by ambulance, the CHP said. Tow trucks were called for the semi and six smaller vehicles.

A SigAlert was issued at 12:08 a.m. Monday shutting down all westbound lanes and diverting traffic off at Fourth Street and Vineyard Avenue. The far right lane was reopened at about 4:20 a.m.
