A 68-year-old woman walking in a marked crosswalk in Bassett died from major injuries when she was struck by a pickup truck that left the scene, authorities said.

Carmen Galvez of La Puente was struck about 5:30 p.m. Sunday as she walked east on Cagliero Street, crossing Puente Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

“As Galvez walked, she was struck by a white pickup truck which was traveling southbound on Puente Avenue and she sustained major injuries,” said CHP Officer Joshua Duran.

Galvez was transported to County USC Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, said CHP Officer Monica Posada.

The pickup was last seen heading south on Puente Avenue, he said.

Its driver was described only as a Hispanic man.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or those with information that could help identify the driver was urged to contact Duran at the CHP’s Baldwin Hills office at (626) 338-1164.
