Two people were decapitated Sunday morning when a car crashed into the back of a big rig on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Granada Hills.

The crash was reported at 12:57 a.m. on the southbound Golden State Freeway just south of the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway, California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball told City News Service.

A man was driving the car and a woman was the passenger and both were believed in their early 30s, Kimball said.

Witnesses told the CHP the silver sedan slammed into the big rig on the right hand shoulder and caught fire.

The CHP issued a SigAlert at 1:28 a.m. shutting down the truck route and all lanes in the area except the HOV lane, Kimball said. At 2:34 a.m., the CHP reopened lanes Nos. 1 and 2 but lane No. 3 and the truck route remained closed. The Roxford Street on-ramp to the southbound Golden State Freeway was also shut down.
