The sheriff’s department Saturday released the name of a man shot to death by deputies in Diamond Bar after he allegedly stabbed his mother.

Benjamin Chin, 30, was pronounced dead at a hospital after the shooting.

Deputies went to the 2900 block of Crooked Creek Drive at 11:45 a.m. on Monday on a report of a man wearing body armor and firing an assault rifle, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Chin stabbed his mother before getting into the confrontation with deputies, sheriff’s officials alleged. Paramedics took the woman to a hospital for treatment and she was discharged later that evening.

Arriving deputies saw the suspect holding the rifle and gave him multiple verbal commands to put the weapon down, including commands amplified on a public address system, officials alleged.

The deputies fired on Chin as he approached a civilian who was stopped in his vehicle on Diamond Bar Boulevard, the officials alleged. No deputies were injured.

The investigation continued, and anyone with information was asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
