An apparent would-be robber who allegedly tried to rob money from a bank customer at a Santa Clarita ATM was instead shot by a security guard after a struggle over a gun.

The shooting happened shortly after 6 p.m. at the Chase Bank branch in the 26900 block of Sierra Highway, south of Via Princessa, according to the Los Angels County Sheriff’s Department.

A security guard intervened in the alleged robbery attempt and the two men struggled over a gun. Two shots were fired, hitting the would-be robber in the head, the department reported.

Deputies from the Santa Clarita station placed the robber in custody and transported him to a hospital. His condition was unknown.
