Two people were killed early Wednesday in a fire that broke out at two La Quinta residences.

Fire crews responded at 2:21 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a residential structure fire in the 53000 block of Avenida Martinez, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Upon arrival, firefighters began to battle the blaze to two residential structures, which were well-involved with fire, fire officials said. Crews requested additional engines to assist with the flames.

By 3:30 a.m., the fire was contained but destroyed the two structures, according to fire officials.

Two unidentified people died at the scene, fire officials said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
