A man was listed in critical condition Saturday after allegedly stabbing himself and being struck by deputy gunfire after charging with a knife, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced.

Deputies responded to an area near 53rd and Cedar streets around 11:10 a.m. Saturday to a report of a person who appeared to be bleeding and disoriented.

Upon arrival, deputies found the man and began to provide medical aid. While a deputy was tending to the man’s medical needs, the man allegedly produced a knife and began stabbing himself, according to Lieutenant Deirdre Vickers.

He then allegedly charged a deputy with the knife, prompting the shooting.

He was struck by gunfire and deputies rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, according to the sheriff’s department.

His identity was not immediately known.

The involved deputy, whose name was withheld, was placed on paid administrative leave per department policy.

Investigators from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office assigned to the Riverside Sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail assumed the investigation.
