A 33-year-old man with a history of domestic violence and violating stay-away orders shot by Anaheim police was charged Wednesday with resisting arrest and assaulting officers.
James Brasher was shot during a confrontation with officers who responded to a domestic dispute at about 8 p.m. Monday in the 700 block of West Santa Ana Street, police said.
Brasher was charged with two counts of assault with a weapon on a peace officer, two counts of resisting arrest, and a count of criminal threats, all felonies, as well as a misdemeanor count of violating a protective order.
Brasher pleaded guilty in August 2022 to corporal injury on a cohabitant, brandishing a weapon and criminal threats, all misdemeanors. He was placed on three years probation and ordered to do eight hours of community service and to participate in a treatment program for batterers.
Brasher pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of violating a protective or stay-away order in October 2022, March 2023 and August 2023.
In July 2022, an ex-girlfriend applied for a protective order against Brasher alleging he beat her on July 5, 2022, in Anaheim, according to court records. The protective order was dismissed later that month when no one showed up in court for follow-up.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the shooting, which is standard procedure.
