A 43-year-old man was fatally shot near downtown Hemet, but it was unknown Monday whether authorities had identified potential suspects.

James Bailey of Hemet was killed at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of West Florida Avenue, near North Palm Avenue, according to the Hemet Police Department.

According to the agency, witnesses called 911 to report multiple gunshots in the area of businesses along Florida, and patrol officers reached the location several minutes later.

They discovered Bailey “suffering from a gunshot wound,” according to police spokesman Gonzalo Alvarez.

Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Alvarez said homicide detectives took over the investigation, but it was unclear Monday whether they had identified possible perpetrators of the attack. There was also no word regarding a potential motive.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the investigative team at 951-765-2324.
