A 23-year-old Florida man suspected of stabbing a homeless person in Santa Monica was taken into custody, police announced Monday.

Damian Garcia, who is also homeless, was arrested Wednesday, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.

A motive for the assault remained unclear, and the victim sustained unspecified injuries, police said.

Garcia was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury and is being held on a fugitive warrant from Florida. He could face extradition and currently remains in the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Police said Garcia has a criminal history that includes assault with a deadly weapon, home invasion, vehicle theft, armed robbery, and resisting arrest with violence.

Anyone with information regarding the assault was urged to contact SMPD Detective Ben Jenkins at 310-458-4884 or Sgt. Chad Goodwin at 310-458-8931. The watch commander can also be reached 24 hours at 310-458-8427.
