A group of bicyclists set off an explosion in a trash can, prompting a road closure and a traffic tie-up in downtown Los Angeles Saturday evening.
The Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad determined the explosive was a firecracker, Officer J. Chaves told City News Service.
The detonation was reported at 5 p.m. Saturday, Chaves said. It prompted the LAPD to investigate a trash fire at Pico Boulevard and 12th Street and temporarily shut down traffic in the area.
Media reports estimated the crowd to number about 30 to 40 bicyclists.
The incident began when the bicyclists were asked to clear the area, and some set off the explosion in a trash can, an LAPD spokesperson told City News.
