A 54-year-old woman was fatally shot by police and another woman was injured at the end of a pursuit in a Gardena strip mall early Tuesday.
The shooting involving officers from the Gardena Police Department was reported at 1:40 a.m. in a strip mall parking lot at the intersection of Rosecrans and Van Ness avenues.
The suspects, both women, led police on a short vehicle pursuit that ended in the parking lot, where Gardena police officers did a PIT maneuver and stopped the suspects’ vehicle, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
A short standoff ensued, during which the driver allegedly produced a firearm, prompting police to open fire. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and no officers were injured.
She was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner as Alexandra Cordoba.
The condition of the second woman was not immediately known.
It was unclear if the suspect fired any shots.
Video from the scene showed the suspect’s SUV with numerous bullet holes in its body and windshield.
