Investigators in Long Beach Thursday were seeking tips from the public as they try to find out who fatally shot a homeless man whose body was found in a riverbed near a freeway.

Officers responded about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday to assist Long Beach Fire Department personnel with a body in the bed of the Los Angeles River near the Gardena (91) Freeway.

“Upon arrival, officers located a male adult victim with a gunshot wound to the upper body,” according to a Long Beach Police Department statement.

Fire department personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene and homicide detectives assumed the investigation.

Police said the man “appeared to be experiencing homelessness.” His name was withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

Anyone with information that could help investigators learn the circumstances surrounding the man’s death was urged to call LBPD homicide detectives Oscar Valenzuela or Michael Hubbard at 562-570-7244.
