The driver of a recreational vehicle is under arrest Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence after they allegedly fatally struck a 9-year-old boy who was riding an electric scooter in Koreatown, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters responded to the area of New Hampshire Avenue and Fourth Street at 7:30 p.m. Thursday regarding a traffic collision. When they arrived at the scene, firefighters learned the driver of the RV was driving south on New Hampshire when they tried to make a left turn onto Fourth and collided with the 9-year-old boy, according to the LAPD.

The victim, who the LAPD identified as Nadir Gavarrete and whose 19-year-old brother was a passenger on the scooter, was taken to a hospital by LAFD paramedics ,where he was pronounced dead, said LAFD spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz.

The 19-year-old man was also taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.

The driver of the RV was arrested at the scene.

The cause of the collision is under investigation, an LAPD spokesman told City News Service.
