A fire that started on the second floor of a Temecula residence caused significant damage Wednesday, displacing a family of five and killing their cat.

The blaze was reported at 3:55 p.m. in the 31000 block of Pauba Road, near Margarita Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said multiple engine and ladder crews were sent to the location and encountered flames burning on the top floor of the two-story house, extending into the attic.

Fire Capt. John Clingingsmith told City News Service that all of the occupants escaped unharmed, except for the pet.

Crews contained the fire by 4:35 p.m. and completely extinguished it roughly 20 minutes later.

Clingingsmith said a chaplain was initially requested due to grief over the lost animal, but that request was canceled a short time later.

Two adults and three children were displaced by the fire, and Red Cross personnel were requested to assist them with finding temporary alternate lodgings.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.

  1. My cat didn’t die it’s alive. I’m the I was one of the children in the fire and all my animals are safe. Both of my cats made it out of the fire but were in need of medical attention. They are currently staying over night at the vet.
