A brush fire that broke out Friday near Diamond Valley Lake in Winchester charred more than eight acres before it was stopped.
The non-injury blaze was reported at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the area of Grigg Road and Washington Street, just east of Highway 79 and less than a mile south of Diamond Valley Lake, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency stated that multiple engine and hand crews were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a moderate rate to the south, where an outbuilding was damaged.
No residences were in the brusher’s path as three Cal Fire air tankers and two water-dropping helicopters initiated runs on the blaze.
Sheriff’s deputies shut down one road leading to the area to prevent curious motorists from driving over to watch crews at work and potentially interfere with operations.
The fire’s forward rate of spread was halted at 2:05 p.m. Full containment was expected by 4 p.m.
The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
