A former Burbank Unified School District Board of Education member is scheduled to be arraigned later this month on a felony conflict-of-interest charge involving a $90,000 clerical contract awarded to a company police say was registered under her daughter’s name.
The Burbank Police Department was contacted on June 4 by personnel from the Burbank Unified School District regarding “concerns about a contract awarded in September 2024 to Specialized Support Services LLC, for up to $90,000 to resolve a two-year backlog of board meeting minutes,” according to a Burbank police statement.
Although the district paid $93,000 to Specialized Support Services from December 2024 to May 2025, “limited work had been completed,” according to police.
“The investigation revealed the company was registered under the name of a relative of Board Member Charlene Tabet, and evidence indicated Ms. Tabet signed documents and endorsed checks in her relative’s name, depositing the payments into her own bank account.”
The relative is Tabet’s adult daughter, according to a report by myBurbank.com.
Tabet, who was arrested Sept. 23, resigned from the board in early September and was charged on Tuesday by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office with one felony count of having a financial interest in a contract or purchase made in an official capacity, according to police and court records. She is no longer in custody.
Tabet is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 30 in downtown Los Angeles.
Anyone with information about the case was urged to contact Burbank police Detective John Voorhis 818-238-3210.
