An man suspected of firing at a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter and threatening family members in South Los Angeles was taken into custody Thursday after officers returned fire.
Officers responded around 1:20 p.m. Thursday to the 2100 block of West 76th Street, near the border with Inglewood and Van Ness Avenue, to reports of a man with a firearm and exhibiting threatening behavior, police said.
Police said upon the arrival of the responding officers an ”officer-related” shooting had occurred, with the suspect subsequently fleeing into the house, prompting SWAT and K9 units to respond to the scene to negotiate with the suspect, who was at a standoff with law enforcement until 5 p.m.
The suspect eventually got out of the house, leading to a police dog being deployed and biting the suspect.
According to police, the suspect has been taken into custody and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Detectives recovered a firearm from the scene for evidence, and no officers or bystanders sustained any injuries during the exchange of gunfire, police said.
The motive for the alleged shooting at the helicopter and the threats to family members remains under investigation.
