Two people were taken into custody Monday after an 8-year-old girl was wounded by a stray bullet fired through the wall of her family’s apartment in the Del Rey neighborhood near Culver City.
The shot was fired about 2:45 p.m. Sunday in the 4700 block of South Slauson Avenue, between Culver Boulevard and the San Diego (405) Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The girl was treated for gunshot wounds and discharged from a hospital Monday afternoon, NBC Los Angeles reported.
The girl’s parents told NBC Los Angeles that the child was playing with her brother and sister when she was struck. At the moment she was shot, her father said, the girl screamed while holding her head.
According to the LAPD, the shot was fired from a neighboring residence.
KTLA5 reported that officers from the LAPD Pacific Division took at least two suspects into custody at an apartment complex in Del Rey shortly after 6 p.m. Monday.
Police did not confirm a report that guns were seized from a neighbor of the girl.
The girl’s parents told NBC Los Angeles they no longer wish to live at the same place out of fear for their safety.
“Somebody discharging their weapon inside an apartment house where there are a lot of children is irresponsible,” said Devora Rogers, the Area E director of the Del Rey Neighborhood Council, told NBC Los Angeles.
“All of us in Los Angeles are responsible for providing a safer environment for families that just want to have their kids to be safe. “
