An armed suspect who was fatally shot by Los Angeles Police Department officers during a confrontation in Reseda was identified Tuesday by county authorities.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office identified the suspect as Alex Canizalez 39.

Officers from the department’s Topanga Division were called at 12:10 a.m. Monday to Sherman Way and Geyser Avenue regarding an assault with a deadly weapon call near a 7-Eleven. When they arrived at the scene, an LAPD helicopter directed officers to the suspect’s location, an LAPD spokesman told City News Service.

When they confronted him, police shot Canizalez .

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene, where they pronounced Canizalez dead, the LAPD said.

No officers were injured in the shooting and a handgun was recovered, the LAPD said.

The area of Sherman Way from Geyser Street to Reseda Boulevard was closed for several hours.
