A man was killed Sunday after being struck by deputy gunfire, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced.

Deputies responded to the 16000 block of Heather Glen Road in Moreno Valley around 12:35 a.m. Sunday to a report of a residential fire. They found the residence fully involved in flames and located a man lying in the ground in the backyard.

Deputies gave the man commands, but the suspect allegedly failed to comply and pointed a firearm at the deputies, which resulted in the shooting. The suspect was struck by gunfire and deputies rendered medical assistance until paramedics arrived.

The suspect was later pronounced dead at a hospital. No additional injuries were reported, and no deputies were injured.

The suspect’s identity was withheld due to the ongoing investigation.

The deputies involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave according to department policy, the sheriff’s department announced.

The identities of the deputies involved were withheld while the sheriff’s Force Investigation Detail conducted the investigation.

Anyone with additional information about the suspect or the shooting was encouraged to contact investigator Mario Moreno at 951-955-2777.
