The body of a man who was struck by a train and killed was found Friday morning in the Central-Alameda section of South Los Angeles.

The pedestrian, believed to be around 40 years old, was reported down by a passerby just before 6 a.m. in 4070 block of South Long Beach Avenue and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz.

The fatality occurred in an area where tracks are used by Metro and Union Pacific, and there was no train present when rescuers arrived at the scene, Lantz said.

It was not clear what kind of train hit the pedestrian and at what time, Lantz said.

The Los Angeles Police Department was investigating the death.
