A motorist was injured Monday in a fire that erupted in an SUV and spread into vegetation on Interstate 10 in Calimesa.
The blaze was reported at 4:25 p.m. on eastbound I-10, between Cherry Valley Boulevard and Singleton Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The GMC Acadia caught fire for unknown reasons, prompting the driver to veer onto the shoulder and stop, according to the CHP.
At some point while exiting the vehicle, the motorist was hurt, suffering unspecified moderate injuries, according to reports from the scene.
Calimesa Fire Department crews reached the location within a few minutes and immediately knocked down the flames in the roadside brush. By 4:50 p.m., the fire in the SUV was also extinguished.
The victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was taken to a regional trauma center for treatment.
CHP officers shut down one eastbound lane on the freeway while firefighters mopped up.
The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
