A 54-year-old San Bernardino man was being held on $2 million bail Saturday on suspicion of fatally assaulting a man in Beverly Hills.

The attack occurred just after 12:40 p.m. Friday near Wilshire and San Vicente boulevards, where officers responded to multiple reports of an assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Beverly Hills Police Department.

The suspect, identified as Christopher Cornelius, was arguing with the victim and allegedly attacked him multiple times with a metal object, according to police. Cornelius then got into his car and allegedly drove toward the victim, running him over before fleeing to a nearby building.

He was arrested without incident shortly after the assault, police said. Authorities said Cornelius has an extensive criminal record, including other violent crimes.

The victim was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where he died as a result of his injuries. His name has not been released.

Cornelius was booked on suspicion of murder.

The relationship between Cornelius and the victim, if any, was unclear.

Anyone with information about the case was urged to call the BHPD at 310-550-9451.
