A 21-year-old man was arrested Friday for allegedly driving while impaired and causing a single-vehicle crash in Orange that killed his passenger.

The fatal crash happened about 3:10 a.m. Friday at La Veta Avenue and Batavia Street, Orange police Lt. Mike Monjaraz said.

The driver, whose name was not immediately released, slammed into a traffic light signal pole, Monjaraz said. He was taken to a hospital and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

A woman in his vehicle died as a result of the crash. Her name was not immediately released but she was in her 20s, Monjaraz said.

Police were looking into the possibility that the driver was involved in a pursuit earlier involving the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers attempted to stop the vehicle earlier in the evening, but whether the driver led police on a pursuit was under investigation, Monjaraz said.

On Wednesday, a man was killed in a crash that occurred in Placentia following a police chase that began in Anaheim.
