A 40-year-old man who stabbed his mother during a confrontation in her San Jacinto home pleaded guilty Friday to attempted murder and was immediately sentenced to seven years to life in state prison.

Charles Andrade Diaz of San Jacinto admitted the felony count under a plea agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office. In exchange for his admission, prosecutors dropped a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony against Diaz.

The defendant’s plea was announced just as his case was called for a preliminary hearing at the Banning Justice Center Friday. Superior Court Judge Rene Navarro certified the terms of the agreement and imposed the sentence stipulated by the prosecution and defense.

According to sheriff’s investigators, on the morning of April 2, 2023, Diaz was involved in an unspecified dispute with his mother, identified only as a then-56-year-old San Jacinto resident, at her property in the 500 block of Peregrine Lane, near Seventh Street.

Sgt. Anthony Pelato said that Diaz “stabbed her … and fled on foot.”

Patrol deputies and paramedics were called to the location, providing immediate medical aid to the victim, who was taken to a regional trauma center for treatment, Pelato said.

The woman has since recovered from her injuries.

Pelato said deputies quickly located Diaz near the residence, taking him into custody without incident.

He had no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
