Customers of Pasadena Water and Power were warned Friday to be aware of scammers posing as private water company representatives as a way of getting inside homes.

The non-profit utility, which provides electrical service to about 65,000 of customers in Pasadena and water service to roughly 38,000 in the city and nearby San Gabriel Valley communities, warned that suspects have knocked on doors and claimed to have a permit to conduct water tests inside homes.

“No such permit exists,” according to a statement from the city of Pasadena. “These individuals are not representatives of the City of Pasadena or PWP. Residents are advised to exercise caution when anyone asks for access to your home.”

According to city officials, “PWP employees rarely need to enter a private residence and only do so through a prearranged appointment. Legitimate City employees wear uniforms featuring the city seal, carry an official City identification badge, and typically drive a clearly marked city vehicle.”
