An investigation of a fatal shooting by Los Angeles Police Department officers of an allegedly armed suspect in the Exposition Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles is underway Friday.
The shooting was reported at 9:30a.m. Thursday near State and Figeroua streets. A LA PD motorcycle officer saw the suspect, who was armed with a rifle, the LAPD said in a statement.
The suspect, a 35-year-old man, was shot in the picnic table-lined thoroughfare between the California Science Center and the Exposition Park Rose Garden, according to broadcast reports.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
No details were immediately released regarding how many officers fired shots at the suspect.
Officers found the rifle at the scene and booked it as evidence, the LAPD said.
As the incident unfolded, students on the nearby USC campus received alerts to avoid the area because of police activity.
