A 40-year-old man suspected of causing a fatal hit-and-run collision in Long Beach was taken into custody Wednesday after turning himself in, police said.
According to the Long Beach Police Department, Christopher Bryant was booked on Wednesday on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, hit-and-run causing death or great bodily injury, and reckless driving. He was being held on $50,000 bail.
Officers responded shortly before 4:50 p.m. Saturday to reports of a hit-and-run collision involving a bicyclist near Redondo Avenue and East Second Street.
A bystander rendered medical aid to the woman upon the arrival of officers. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded to the location and took the victim to a hospital, where she later died as a result of her injuries.
Detectives determined after a preliminary investigation that the woman was riding a bicycle southbound on Redondo when a 2025 gray Hyundai Sonata traveling westbound on East Second Street entered the intersection at a high rate of speed, failed to yield at a stop sign, and struck her, police said.
The Sonata fled the scene and was last seen traveling westbound on East Second Street from Redondo Avenue. Police said speed was a contributing factor leading to the fatal collision.
The name of the victim was being withheld pending notification of relatives.
