A big rig overturned on the transition from the Corona (71) Expressway to the Riverside (91) Freeway in west Corona Thursday, injuring the driver and prompting a closure of the connector.

The crash was reported at 10:35 a.m. Thursday on the southbound 71 transition to the westbound 91, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The agency said the trucker apparently lost control in the slow lane, causing the tractor-trailer to roll onto its side, coming to rest on the dirt shoulder.

No other vehicles were involved.

The trucker was able to self-extricate prior to Corona Fire Department crews reaching the location. He suffered unspecified minor injuries and was taken to Chino Valley Medical Center for treatment, the CHP said.

The rig spilled diesel and other fluids onto the 71, requiring a hazardous materials cleanup, according to reports from the scene.

Officers completely shut down the transition shortly after 11 a.m., snarling traffic through the area. A SigAlert was issued at 11:32 a.m. due to the closure and resulting traffic jam.

There was no word on what the truck was carrying.

It was expected to be raised onto its wheels and towed away by 2 p.m.
