A bicyclist who entered a Cathedral City intersection against a red light was killed in late-night collision with a vehicle that also did not stop for a red signal, police said Friday.

The 48-year-old bicyclist, a resident of Cathedral City, was westbound on Ortega Road at 10:55 p.m. Thursday and entered the intersection with Date Palm Drive in a crosswalk, but against a red traffic signal. The vehicle heading south on Date Palm Drive also entered the Ortega intersection against a red light.

The bicyclist was hit and pronounced dead at the scene.

“The driver of the vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for minor facial injuries,” according to Cathedral City Police Department Sgt. Ryan Schuelke, who said the exact cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Police declined to reveal the decedent’s gender and it was not clear whether the driver was or would be cited.
