Crews quickly extinguished a fire Friday at a five-story apartment building in Westwood after reports of interior smoke prompted a response from firefighters.

The fire was reported at 11:42 a.m. in the 700 block of South Gayley Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

First-arriving firefighters saw no visible smoke or flames from the outside, but received multiple reports of interior smoke with residents sheltering in place, the department said.

“Companies proceeded offensively, quickly locating and extinguishing a rubbish fire in a stairwell,” LAFD spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz said. “A small number of companies will remain on scene for smoke removal.”

No injuries were reported.
