Long Beach police Thursday were investigating two separate crashes Wednesday night that each resulted in the death of a pedestrian.
The first collision was reported about 9:30 p.m. at Pacific Coast Highway and Maine Avenue, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
“Upon arrival, officers discovered an unconscious male lying in the roadway.” according to an LBPD statement. “Officers provided medical aid until the Long Beach Fire Department arrived on scene. The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries on scene.”
He was identified by the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office as 39-year-old Ramon Maldonado, a resident of Hacienda Heights.
Police said preliminary findings indicate a white 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling eastbound on Pacific Coast Highway, just east of Maine Avenue, when it struck a pedestrian who was crossing outside a marked crosswalk.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Speed, distracted driving and impaired driving do not appear to have been factors, police said.
The second fatal crash occurred about 10:50 p.m. near Seventh and Dawson streets, according to police.
“Personnel from the Long Beach Fire Department transported the pedestrian to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” police said.
Investigators said a 2007 Toyota Tundra was traveling eastbound in the No. 2 lane of Seventh Street when it struck a pedestrian who entered the roadway from between two parked cars.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, and speed appears to have been a factor in the collision, police said.
