Authorities Monday continued investigating a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 in Cathedral City that left a 65-year-old man dead and resulted in a DUI arrest.
Jose Crespo Guevara of Bell suffered fatal injuries shortly after 6:30 a.m. Saturday on eastbound I-10 west of Bob Hope Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A Lexus and a Toyota were traveling eastbound when the Lexus, at an unconfirmed speed, made an unsafe turn to the right for unknown reasons and struck the Toyota, the CHP said.
Both vehicles veered off the roadway following the collision. The Lexus came to rest in a body of water, while the Toyota overturned onto its roof and submerged in standing water from recent rain, CHP Officer David Torres said.
The driver and sole occupant of the Lexus was able to exit the vehicle, while three occupants of the Toyota also exited, Torres said.
Guevara, the Toyota’s driver, was extricated and found unresponsive at the scene. He was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he was pronounced dead, according to Torres.
The CHP identified the Lexus driver as Ricardo Antonio Avila, who was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Background information on Avila was not immediately available.
