Police arrested a 22-year-old man suspected of being intoxicated when he crossed into opposing lanes and collided with another vehicle Thursday, resulting the death of a 37-year-old pedestrian in downtown Los Angeles.
The crash occurred about 2:10 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Ninth Street and Towne Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The pedestrian was walking south on Ninth Street when he was hit by a red Nissan Kicks, which was eastbound in the westbound lanes of Ninth Street. The driver was identified as Orlando Larios, police said. Larios’ city of residence was not provided.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. A description of the person was not immediately available.
“Central Traffic Division officers responded to the scene, conducted an investigation and determined Larios was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage,” according to an LAPD statement, which added that Larios was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony DUI.
