A child last seen in Duarte in 2020 has been found in North Carolina, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced Tuesday.

The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services contacted the Temple Sheriff’s Station to report the child missing on July 1, 2020. DCFS had been conducting an investigation involving the child and the child’s mother, who had custody and had stopped communicating with DCFS personnel, was believed to have taken the child, according to the sheriff’s department.

Temple Station detectives received information suggesting the child might be in Washington County, North Carolina. On Friday, detectives contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, which conducted a follow-up investigation within its jurisdiction and located the child enrolled at a local school.

The child has been safely recovered and is now in protective custody, the sheriff’s department reported.

The investigation remains ongoing and the sheriff’s department continues to work with DCFS and authorities in North Carolina.
