Police called to a Mid-City neighborhood Tuesday on a report of a man armed with a firearm shot and wounded the suspect, who was hospitalized in stable condition.

No officers were injured in the shooting, which happened after officers were called at about 6:40 a.m. to the 1800 block of Alsace Avenue, just south of Venice Boulevard near Redondo Boulevard, to investigate an assault with a deadly weapon call, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Prior to the shooting, police had said a suspect in a vehicle was reported to have pointed a gun at someone who asked him to turn his music down.

A report from the scene showed a gun and a knife were visible behind a police cruiser at the location, where overhead video showed a large presence of officers.

An LAPD spokesman said when officers arrived, they were directed to the suspect, who was in possession of what appeared to be a firearm, and a shooting occurred.

The officer said the man was hit in the upper body. He was taken to a hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel, who were called to the scene about an hour after the initial call.

An officer said the suspect’s condition was stable. The purported firearm and a knife would be booked as evidence, the officer said.

The suspect’s name and age were not immediately disclosed.

Janine Cohen, an attorney who lives in a gated townhouse community across the street, said that shortly after 7:30 a.m., “I heard a gunshot, immediately followed by a series of additional shots in rapid succession. Shortly thereafter, I heard police loudspeakers instructing someone to come out with his hands up.”

Not long afterward, she said she saw a man “sitting up on a gurney” before being loaded into a waiting ambulance.

“It is normally a fairly quiet neighborhood aside from the occasional loud party and fireworks activity,” Cohen said. “Shortly after I moved in, there was a drive-by shooting that was gang-related, but there had not been any similar events until today.”
