Gang detectives in Long Beach Tuesday announced the arrest of a 74-year-old suspect in connection with a 2024 no-hit shooting after a road-rage incident, along with the seizure of 30 guns, 12 of them untraceable.
The shooting happened on Dec. 24, 2024, when officers were called to the area of Ocean Boulevard and Alamitos Avenue to investigate a report of gunfire.
“The preliminary investigation indicated a dispute had occurred between the drivers of two vehicles in the area,” according to a Long Beach Police Department statement. “The dispute escalated and one of the drivers fired multiple rounds at the other vehicle.”
A nearby residence was struck by gunfire, but no injuries were reported.
Detectives identified the suspect involved in the shooting as 74-year-old James William Higgins of Long Beach and arrested him on Friday.
“Detectives served a search warrant at his residence,” police said. “During the search warrant service, detectives recovered 30 firearms, 12 of which were unserialized, along with a large quantity of ammunition.”
Higgins was booked on suspicion of discharging a firearm at an inhabited dwelling, assault with a firearm, manufacturing or assembling an unregistered firearm and manufacturing or causing to be manufactured an assault weapon. His bail was set at $250,000.
The case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration, police said.
