A group of hikers were rescued Thursday after getting lost in the Mecca Hills Wilderness Area near the community of Mecca.

The rescue was reported shortly after noon Thursday near the area of Painted Canyon and Box Canyon roads, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The sheriff’s aviation unit assisted in rescuing the hikers due to their remote location, according to Sgt. Robert Martinez.

It was not immediately clear if any injuries were reported.
