Los Angeles Police Department officers shot a man who allegedly fired a gun and brandished the weapon in the Skid Row section in downtown Los Angeles Thursday.

The shooting was reported about 4:10 a.m. Thursday in the area of Seventh Street and Ceres Avenue, according to an LAPD spokesman. Streets in the immediate area were closed for the police investigation.

Officers had responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at the location, he said.

The suspect’s name and age were not immediately available.

Video showed the suspect being loaded into an ambulance.

A Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman confirmed that paramedics took a male of unknown age to a hospital.

Police later said the suspect was undergoing surgery, but was in a stable condition. No officers or community members were injured.

According to Fox11, which cited police at the scene, the suspect was in a recreational vehicle and had fired shots at people. Officers responded and ordered him to come out, which he did.

Still armed, the man was then shot, the station reported.

In video from the scene, shots could be heard ringing out amid a large police presence. A police SUV was stopped with its front end on a sidewalk.

A firearm was recovered at the scene and will be booked and analyzed, police said.

“Our Force Investigation Division is here conducting a thorough investigation,” according to a police statement. “We ask for the community’s patience as the area of Seventh (Street) and Ceres (Avenue) is closed and will be impacted.”
