A 58-year-old woman accused of stabbing her boyfriend during an altercation at their Banning home was charged Friday with assault resulting in great bodily injury and other offenses.

Tammy Harlane Smith was arrested Wednesday following a Banning Police Department investigation in the 1100 block of Oregon Trail, near Red Bluff Lane.

Along with the assault count, Smith was charged with domestic violence and a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony.

She was being held on $70,000 bail at the Smith Correctional Facility and was slated to make her initial court appearance Friday afternoon at the nearby Banning Justice Center.

Banning police Capt. Brandon Smith — no relation to the defendant — alleged that just after noon Wednesday, the woman and victim, whose name was not disclosed, were involved in a dispute at the Oregon Trail property that culminated in her grabbing a knife and plunging it into him.

Witnesses called 911, and patrol officers arrived within minutes, taking Tammy Smith into custody without incident.

Her boyfriend was taken to a regional trauma center, where he was treated for his wounds and later released. He was expected to make a full recovery, according to the captain.

Smith has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
