A two-alarm fire Thursday on the west end of Moreno Valley damaged several residential properties, injuring a fireman, bringing down power lines and causing other hazards that prompted a road closure.

The blaze was reported shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday in the area of Edgemont Street and Cottonwood Avenue, less than a quarter-mile east of Interstate 215, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency stated that multiple engine crews from the county, as well as the Riverside Fire Department and Hemet Fire Department, were sent to the location and encountered flames raging around one home, extending to another, as well as threatening additional structures.

There was no word on possible mandatory evacuations.

Power lines collapsed at the location, falling onto the roadway, leading sheriff’s deputies to shut down Edgemont for public safety.

A fire captain suffered smoke exposure and was taken to nearby Riverside University Medical Center for treatment. He was in stable condition, according to reports from the scene.

As of 5:45 p.m., crews were making progress encircling the blaze, which did not spread into vegetation.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.
